research thoughts

I am a postgrad masters (architecture) student looking at the relationship between the philosophy of simplicity and the use of prefabrication in architecture.

I am hoping to build up a strong case to put forward to advocate the use of prefabrication in an architectural, sustainable and ultimately affordable way.

I would be very interested to hear others' thoughts on these related areas, including:
- consumption
- simplicity
- architecture (as distinct to building)
- prefabrication
- sustainability
- affordability
- fabprefab (current international trend)

Hi Pam, you might already have seen it, but in the latest arq (vol 11, no.3/4, 2007) there is a great article about similar philosophical issues as you mention. I am in love with the conclusion:

"If we regard simplicity as condensation or distillation rather than reduction or elimination, we may achieve places that are less intrusive while more rewarding, less fashionable while more enduring. I believe that in this process of condensation we create an architecture that engages people more profoundly while also being more sympathetic to its environment. Simplicity may not always provide the jazzy image so beloved by the student, especially when viewed on a computer screen. But it will be far more substantial in a life rendered not as a virtual reality, but within the reality in which we live" p.234.

Anyway, the article might be interesting for your research. it just provided me with another way of looking at the issue, i mean, i always thought we needed to reduce, reduce, reduce. Maybe its just semantics.
